Why are Oak Garages so popular with Classic Car Enthusiasts?

Perhaps one of the most frequent requests over our 12 years in the Oak Frame Structure business has been “could you design and build a garage to house my classic car(s)?”. Oak garages provide a range of benefits that are important to help keep a classic car or expensive sports cars, in the best possible condition. Cheshire Oak Structures offer a variety of Oak building designs suitable for classic or sports car enthusiasts to help protect their vehicles all year round and allow them to enjoy them with peace of mind.

In the winter months an Oak garage will protect from cold, moisture and damp. Our Oak frame and Larch weatherboard construction allows the walls to breathe, meaning they do not hold moisture which in turn helps to prevent condensation, so protecting against damp, rust, mouldy leather, interiors, etc. In the summer months Oak buildings are cool and shady so help prevent oxidation which increases in warmer weather and damages metal & leather.

All our Oak garages feature a traditional jointed Oak frame created from substantial constructional grade green Oak, using traditional time-honoured techniques including mortice and tenon joints, cog joints, knees braces, draw pegs, purlins, finials, fascia boards, etc. We use specialist weatherproofing systems in our construction process to further ensure your Oak building is fully able to withstand the elements. In addition all our buildings have full structural calculations to ensure they are strong and stable enough to resist all appropriate structural loads (eg. gravity, wind, snow, rain, temperature, etc). Structural calculations are also a requirement for building regulation certificates.

At Cheshire Oak Structures we can either design an Oak garage from our standard footprint, which features bay widths amongst the largest in the marketplace providing plenty of room to safely open doors and move around the vehicle, plus a choice of depths and heights. The 3.9m ridge height is most popular as it often means planning permission is not required. Or, we can design an Oak Frame Garage to bespoke dimensions depending on the specific site eg. without the centre Oak post if there is a limited turning circle or with varying bay widths/heights to suit individual vehicles.

Many clients have included a workshop area into their Oak Frame Garage design. Some Oak Frame Workshops have been designed with a car lift to help with restoration projects and specific areas for storage of tools and equipment. We can also install different floor finishes depending on the client’s requirements.

Security is another important consideration and several options are available including fully lockable heavy duty Oak double doors. Roller shutter doors, operated by electronic key fobs are very popular and offer a selection of colour choices and work extremely well with an Oak Frame Garage. We had one enquiry from a gentleman who likes to see his classic cars from the house so roller shutters are ideal as he can raise and lower the doors as he wishes!
