Exploring the Thrill of Vintage Cars
To follow on from our blog in June, Exciting Events to Attend compiled by Cheshire Oak Structures, we thought we’d highlight a few more exciting events, including car tours and hill climbs. These events attract a wide variety of vehicles, and we often hear about them through our customers who participate. From our base halfway between Chester and Shrewsbury, we have several local car tours and easily accessible hill climb venues.
The Joy of Car Tours
Generally speaking, car tours feature vintage sports cars exploring the beautiful countryside. The Vintage Sports Car Club is a fantastic resource for finding out about car tours. They arrange a calendar of events through the summer, which you can check out on their VSCC's Interactive Events Calendar.
A typical car tour starts with coffee, where participants receive a rally plate for their car and a road book. This book contains detailed instructions on the route, including places of interest, and usually ends with a meal at the finish point.
The Lancashire Tour took place at the end of July, starting in the Ribble Valley. It continued up Waddington Fell, where a hill climb occurred around 1914, before driving over Pendle Hill, offering beautiful panoramic views.
On 9 August 2026, the Cheshire Tour will start from Farndon, just south of Chester. This route, approximately 75 miles long, journeys through four counties. It features a variety of scenic touring roads, avoiding very narrow lanes that vintage sports cars enjoy. Participants can expect attractive landscapes and charming villages along the way.
The list of entries for the Cheshire tour is available on the Vintage Sports Car Club website. It includes a variety of vehicles, such as a Sunbeam Alpine, Jaguar XK150 Roadster, Austin 7 Ulster, MG, Wolseley Hornet, and a Sunbeam 4.5-litre Laundaulette.
The Welsh Trial: A Classic Event
The Vintage Sports Car Club hosts a Welsh Trial on 10 & 11 October in the town of Presteigne. First held in 1939, the Welsh Trial is a cornerstone of the VSCC sporting season. This event is open exclusively to vintage cars, allowing competitors to experience the thrill of competing on classic trial sections.
Interestingly, Presteigne and the surrounding Marches border region are well-known for their oak-framed buildings. The main street in Presteigne features a variety of historical oak frame structures.
Hill Climbs: The Perfect Companion to Car Tours
Car tours and hill climbs are closely linked. A great place to start investigating hill climbs is the British Hillclimb Championship website.
Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb in Worcestershire boasts being the oldest motorsport venue in the world still using its original course. They host hill climbs, motorsport, social events, and car club meetings throughout the year. August is a particularly busy month at Shelsley Walsh, featuring:
8 & 9 August: The British Hillclimb Championship
20 August: Cars in the Valley – a social gathering for owners of classic, modern, vintage, or supercars and bikes
22 August: Food & Fuel – Up the Hill. This hill climb debuted in 2025, featuring a curated mix of cars, hill climb runs, display cars, and a fantastic selection of street food.
Also, very close to Cheshire Oak Structures is the site for Loton Park Hill Climb at Alberbury near Shrewsbury. The Hagley and District Light Car Club, established in 1935, hosts this hill climb and has a busy calendar of events during the summer months, including:
29 & 30 August: MSUK British & Midland Hill Climb Championship Meeting
26 & 27 September: Interclub Hill Climb Championship Meeting with NHCA Motorbikes
